What do you think about E-Learning?  Many of our students engage in coursework everyday online.  E-Learning creates discipline and opportunities to think critically.  I don’t think online learning can ever replace a face-to face teacher, but I do agree with Dr. June Atkinson, Superintendent of North Carolina School’s when she presented a scenario last fall at Community In Schools’ Mentoring Summit in Raleigh.  Dr. Atkinson asked the audience to envision a student working at their dining room table at night on coursework and attending class the next day where they worked on homework.  What an interesting scenario.  Student metacognitively learns to work oh his or her own at home, then has access to a world of knowledge and questions at school the next day while completing homework.  I also envision how computer online work can enhance cooperative learning among our students.  Students work in teams and small groups to discover solutions or to design projects using computers to find knowledge to support their answers while participating in online discussion boards! Students are engaged and learning while experiencing life skills such as team work and are practicing independence.

Today an online student came in to ALC and we asked her how her online Chemistry course was going.  She looked discouraged, then said but “I logged on again last night and took notes which helped me a lot.”  On her own this student developed a learning skill which will follow her for life! Let us know your   experiences with online learning.
